Literature Text

Inches away, a young girl sits
Aware of my presence, her eyebrows knit
The toddler she holds, she clutches him tighter
Anticipating my next move

A backpack rests on the carpeted floor
As she balances motherhood, homework, and chores
Her eyes rest on mine, but she soon turns away
Expecting my glances to follow

The cross on my shirt must say it all
I'm one of "those Christians": a know-it-all
The opposing stereotypes hover, unspoken
Tainting the thoughts on both sides

The boy breaks the silence, demanding attention
His mother is lost in another dimension
She stares out the window, at ridges and peaks
Wondering why I’m still here

I must tell her something, but I know not what to say
And my stop is swiftly approching my way
I arrive much too quickly; I said not a word
To this young girl who sat mere inches away
WOW, THIS IS SO OLD. LIKE OVER SIX MONTHS OLD.

Found it while cleaning up my Random Scenes file.

...so...this is a 100% true story. Wrote it about five minutes after it happened.

In case the setting isn't clear, it's on the bus.
