Literature Text

Fingers interlocked,
Our feet move in unison.

No music plays in the background:
Our voices intertwined compose the melody
Alone.

Her silken skirt moves like water;
Her hair flows across her neck.
Covering all but her eyes;
Her bright, monochromatic eyes

Another couple enters
As we twirl around the room.

They mimic our movements effortlessly.

Their melody is softer than ours,
Slower,
More refined.

They waltz closer.

“May I cut in?” he asks in passing, voice smooth;
His female partner asks the same of me.

Reluctance sets in, but we both oblige,
Going our separate ways.

The girl before me beams with silver;
The man behind me smirks
False intentions taunting me,
I prepare for the worst.

“What’s your name?” I ask the girl.
“Sorrow,” she replies.

Her icy touch mirrors mine
As we glide into position.

I hear a laugh
And turn my head
Amy’s across the room
They’re already dancing

Her hair is longer than before
Whooshing through the air
As they spin
Ever faster.

And she’s having the time of her life
Without me.

Sorrow touches my cheek
Drawing my attention away
“Can’t we have fun, too?” she croons.

So we begin.

“Who is your partner?” I ask.
“You,” she replies.
“No, the one with Amy.”
Her smile is muted as she whispers, “Time.”

Sorrow’s hand remains on my face,
Distracting me from pulling away.
And she stays.

Amy dearest ages still,
Unaware of her own transformation.
Darkened hair.
Heightened stature.

No longer a girl,
But a woman.

Sorrow's arms wrap around my waist,
Disallowing me to pull away.
And she stays.

Time stops dancing.
He leans closer to my love,
And steals her with a kiss.

Sorrow holds my lips captive with her own;
I try in vain to pull away,
But she stays.

"Fly with me," he whispers
In her ear.
Amy glances at me,
Reluctant,
So she stays.

Relieved for a moment,
I lower my guard.
But Time continues
To whisper delights
Of the future.

...A future I cannot share.

But Amy doesn’t know.
Entranced,
She takes the bait
And falls into the trap.

Time leads her down a path I cannot follow

Sorrow’s lips press against my cheek
And she stays

No matter how many times I tell her to go away.
...or, if you prefer, "The Dance of Time and Sorrow"

This is officially the longest poem I've ever written since "Colorblind." ^^;

Yeah, Amy's name proves that it's a Shad poem. :P

Shad's biggest obstacle to loving Amy is his sorrow from losing Julianna, and Amy's difficulty (as we'll find out much later in the story) is her mortality.

Time steals Amy away, and Sorrow holds Shad captive. Fitting, ne?
